“Fashion’s hit cover-up” is how Vogue Patterns dubbed the caftan for this golden-hour desert scene in summer, 1973.
Denise Hopkins and Karen Bjornson model two 1970s caftan patterns: Vogue 8587 and Vogue 2894, a Vogue Americana design by Chuck Howard. Vogue readers would have seen the regular Vogue pattern in U.S. Vogue’s May 1973 issue — as worn by Beverly Johnson and photographed by Kourken Pakchanian.
