Divided dress — or cropped jumpsuit? Whatever you call it, McCall’s illustrator Blanche Rothschild gave us two of them on this cover for Summer, 1936, in candy-coloured prints.

The pattern is McCall 8702, which the envelope calls a sports dress with divided skirt. But the catalogue uses a simpler name for the new style. Inside, a trend report flags “Divided Dresses. Lots of these are around now, and you wear them for golf, for tennis, for sports in general.”
